Over the last 3 months Julington Creek Baseball (JCB) staff and parents have invested many volunteer hours in multiple Durbin Park improvements and maintenance activities. Led and managed by Dave Alberts, JCB Majors Division Commissioner, volunteers donated their time to complete improvements and maintenance activities including:
St. Johns County has been helpful with achieving specialty tasked projects that are beyond JCB volunteers’ level of expertise (e.g., plumbing and electrical repairs, welding bleacher benches, and repairing the scoreboards). In addition, the Julington Creek 12U Travel parents have greatly improved the quality and choices of concession food at Durbin Park; especially those breakfast bagels. Yummm!!!!
The JCB Board would like to thank the following volunteers for their time and effort on these important park projects: Dave Alberts, Adam Lauramore, Dana Romano, Dan Bohan, Shane Johnston, and several parents of the JCB 11U Cobras and 12U Thunder teams. These helpful volunteers have taken the initiative to continue making Durbin Park baseball fields a place where other northeast Florida leagues want to come and play.
More improvements on the way…
The St. Johns County baseball fields at Durbin Park were in need of dugout improvements. During practices and games, many Julington Creek Baseball (JCB) players leave their helmets and gloves on the dugout floor resembling a typical 11-year old’s bedroom. Players looking for their gloves or hats had to explore the minefield of equipment within the disorganized dugouts. To help JCB players manage their equipment during games and practices, the local Mandarin Boy Scouts Troop 321 came to the rescue with the construction of new helmet cubbies. The Scouts coordinated the design of the helmet cubbies, developed the list of building materials, and assisted with construction. Led by Mr. Doug Grimaldi of Troop 321 and JCB coach, the project took over 250 volunteer hours to complete. Each of the eight dugouts at Durbin Park now has a 12-helmet cubbie for players to store their hats, gloves, water bottle, etc. Mark Harvey, JCB President, said, “JCB is grateful for the extensive amount of time and effort our local Mandarin Boy Scout Troop 321 and the many JCB parents who embraced the completion of this valuable project at Durbin Park.” The JCB Board is greatly appreciative for Coach Doug’s long hours at the ballfields and for the assistance by Chad Carper of Home Built Woodworking of St. Johns, Bryan Strazinsky of Three J’s Painting, Dave Alberts and parents of the JCB 11U Cobras, and several other volunteers.
The JCB Titans were Champions at the Nations "Find the Gold" Tournament at New Smyrna Beach on March 18-19.
The team scored 75 runs, hit 13 home runs and batted .467 as a team over the two day tournament.
JCB Opening Day was on Saturday, March 3rd. Perfect weather made for a great day of baseball.
In addition to some exciting baseball, the festivities included a DJ with music and player introductions and announcements for Rookies division teams.
Additionally we had representatives from the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, family photo booth opportunities, peanut and snow cone vendors.
The JCB Board will be reviewing opportunities for similar activities on other weekends this spring. Stay tuned for more!
